Formed in 2017 by Varanon “Lue” Phrommala (bass), Osamu Sakurai (guitar/vocals) and Alice Catherine (accordion/vocals) in Northern Thailand, Bamboo Tambourine stylizes creations in dub and roots reggae, jazz manouche, psychedelic rock, occasionally with a North African flair, with an energized, cross-cultural sense of rhythm and songwriting approach. They were joined in 2018 by Daniel Eiland (bass) for a musical tour in Vietnam and confined to the same country throughout the worldwide shutdown of 2020-2022. During this time, they gained a drummer in the form of Seb Urinovsky. In 2022, the central figures of the group, Alice and Osamu, joined drummer Robert Arthur Mackeen for a stripped-down tour of Japan and formed fully as a quartet in Vietnam the same year, touring again with 50 artists on one bus for one month on the infamous Rec Tour.
This Thursday, they will collaborate with Manuel Orkestar’s poetry, to form Bamboo Tambourine Orkestar unit. So, expect to see Bamboo Tambourine, but with a twist!
“Those beautiful gypsy melodies that somehow capture old Romani tradition and our desire to dance all at once. Combine with a driving reggae backbeat. Played with precision and taste. Creating a fire over the length of their performance. You have Bamboo Tambourine.” (Hanoi Social Club)
